Complementary and Alternative Therapies

A wide range of complementary and alternative therapies are now available in the UK. If you are interested in finding out more about alternative therapies Mind Publications has produced a booklet providing an `A - Z' introductory summary of the thinking behind a particular therapy and what the therapy involves.

The approaches described may be viewed as an alternative to medical treatment, but they may also be seen as complementary to medical treatment. Several different therapies may be used simultaneously to complement each other.

Complementary therapists emphasize that they adopt a holistic approach in diagnosis and treatment. They aim to take into account physical, emotional and spiritual factors, to see the person in terms of their unique life history and present situation.

No therapy is a cure-all. Some therapies may work for some people and not for others. Before going to a complementary therapist, it is advisable to consult your GP to ensure that your complaint is not best dealt with by conventional treatment.

Service Definitions

Services providing advice and information relating to all aspects of mental health.
These are therapies that are not part of current standard medical practice (for example acupuncture, reflexology or aromatherapy). Therapies are termed as complementary when used in addition to conventional treatments and as alternative when used instead of conventional treatment.
Complimentary therapies are alternative medicine systems based on promoting an equilibrium between mind and body, tending toward prevention rather than cure. Increasingly, many are becoming recognized as complimentary to traditional medical practice. Some are now partially covered by health insurance.
