SUN Project

What is the Sun Project?
It is a service run by the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, offering therapeutic groups for people with or without a diagnosis of personality disorder. Currently we offer four groups a week aimed at helping people to cope with distressing thoughts and feelings in a safe way.
Coming to a Sun group can help you get the right support when you need it and can help prevent the need for psychiatric hospital admission.

Who Runs the Sun Project?
The group is facilitated by experienced mental health professionals who are trained to deliver this type of group and supervised by the Croydon Personality Disorder  Service senior mental health clinicians.

How do we help?
In a Sun group you develop your coping skills through being helped to:

  1. Share what you are worried or upset about and clarify your thoughts and feelings about your situation. Talk through the actions you have taken in response to the worry and their consequences.
  2. Explore with you the thinking that led to your actions or responses.
  3. Explore with you the positive and negative consequences of your actions or responses.
  4. Generate alternative responses or ways of coping with your thoughts and feelings about the situation.
  5. Develop and write a crisis and support plan (CASP) with suggestions of ways of coping with your situation.
  6. Come back to a group at a later date and share the effectiveness of your written plan (CASP) and update it as needed, noting what helped with your thoughts and  feelings so that in the future you may approach a similar difficulty with more confidence and a range of skills so that you do not get so overwhelmed.
  7. Help other people in the Sun Project to go through the above steps so that you get to feel that you can be a helpful and supportive person with strengths and capabilities and to improve your sense of personal empowerment

Service Definitions

Services providing advice and information relating to all aspects of mental health.
It is common for someone with a personality disorder to be impulsive, have high levels of sensitivity, be aggressive, attention seeking and overly dependent on others. However there is a lot of debate about this disorder. The World Health Organisation defines them as "deeply ingrained and enduring behaviour patterns, manifesting themselves as inflexible responses to a broad range of personal and social situations."
Groups or organisations set up to support the specific needs of mental health service users, and their carers.
